The Subject Area Chairpersons

         The Subject Area Chairperson is appointed by the Directress upon the recommendation of the Principal and has a term of one (1) year with possible re-appointments.  He/she assists in the supervision and evaluation of the department’s instructional program specifically in the subject area placed in her/his charge.  She/he is directly responsible to the Academic Coordinator.

 

         The Subject Area Chairperson is expected to:

 

1. Acquaint the teachers during the orientation meeting with:

 

    a. The philosophy and objectives of the institution and of the High School and of the subject

        area.

    b. The scope and sequence of the program and general scheme of instruction.

    c. The course requirements, e.g., lesson plans, routine activities such as preparation of test

        items, construction of learning activities, ways of reporting student progress, etc.

 

2. Check and approve:

 

   a. scope and sequence/syllabi

   b. lesson plans

   c. progress records like record notebook, grading sheets, facsimile, test questions, etc.

 

3. Submit to the Academic Coordinator:

 

   a. periodical test questions for all levels in his/her subject area

   b. minutes of meetings in his/her area

   c. accomplish observation and evaluation forms

   d. evaluation of teachers (semestral)

   e. year-end performance review report of the subject area

 

4. Coordinate:

 

   a. curricular content

   b. co-curricular activities with curricular content

   c. pertinent subject matter with other subject areas for more meaningful learning

 

5. Supervise implementation of curricular content through:

 

   a. classroom observation and post conferences

   b. periodic meetings with subject area teachers

   c. follow-up of the individual teachers

 

6. Develop teachers’ competence by:

  

   a. assisting each teacher to look critically at himself/herself and to arrive at a clear appraisal

       and better understanding of the student’s attitude towards their studies and performance, in

       general, and in specific subject, in particular

   b. sharing with the teachers new educational approaches and techniques

   c. conducting or arranging seminars, conferences and workshops designed to update teaching

       techniques and procedures and/or upgrade professional efficiency.

 

7. Plan major activities for the school year like field trips, symposia, contestsand exhibits.

 

8. Evaluate:

   a. accomplishment of subject area objectives based on the performance of teachers and

       students

   b. accomplishment of subject are objectives in as far as their carrying out the objectives of both

       the Institution and the High School

 

9. Keep abreast of researches and latest trends in her subject area by:

 

   a. attending conferences, seminars, workshops and summer classes

   b. keeping informed of activities in other schools and in other countries related to their subject

       area

   c. being informed of new textbooks and instructional materials

   d. studying and discussing educational trends and innovations

 

10. Assist the Academic Coordinator in:

 

   a. the selection of instructional materials and textbooks

   b. recruiting and recommending new teachers

 

11. Confer with the Academic Coordinator regularly on:

 

   a. the performance of teachers and the general condition of instruction in his/her area

   b. the progress of the students in the subject area and the provisions for remedial and

       enrichment programs.
